Hull #057 - Hobo

Bristol 27 “Hobo”

Quick Facts

Sailboat History

11/13/25 – The initial owner of the vessel Hobo was likely Cass Gidley Marina of Sausalito, California. Given the marina’s operational history, dating back to 1961 (source), it is surmised that they may have taken direct delivery of the boat from the Bristol Yachts factory in Bristol, Rhode Island.

For several decades, until the mid-2000s, Hobo was utilized as a rental sailboat, serving countless sailors exploring the San Francisco Bay.

Upon the closure of Cass Gidley Marina (circa 2010), Hobo and three sister Bristol 27s (Gypsy, Vagabond, and Nomad) were sold to the highest bidder.  Scott, of Underway LLC (Skookum Marine), acquired Gypsy and Vagabond, which he currently (2025) rents for $100 daily on Fern Ridge Lake in Eugene, Oregon.  Hobo was sold to Patrick.

As of 2025, Hobo remains actively sailed on the San Francisco Bay.

Owner Comments

11/12/25 – I think the hull number is 57, built in 1967. It’s a Weekender version and I got her in 2014.

This is a gallery I started when the boat was hauled in 2023.

You can also see the tilt up motor well modification I made in 2020. It has been a game changer for me not needing to carry the outboard motor up and down the companionway steps every time I went sailing. I did that while the boat was in the water, so I never finished the cosmetics on the outside of the hull. I have a lot of pictures and videos of that work that I need to organize before I upload them. In addition to improving the outboard motor well, I re-cored most of the deck in stages during the first five years I had the boat (that’s why the paint colors are slightly different everywhere. I tried a different method of doing the non-skid each time I completed a section, sometimes years apart….

I’m reasonably certain this was one of 4 Bristol 27 Weekenders used as rental boats and for sailing lessons at Cass Gidley Marina in Sausalito until they closed in the mid 2000s. They may have been originally purchased by them.
The boats were named: Hobo, Gypsy, Vagabond, and Nomad. I’ve actually had people tell me they learned to sail on Hobo as teenagers.

Let me know if you think pictures of the motor-well modification would be useful and that will motivate me to get those uploaded somewhere.
