Sailboat’s History

This boat was built for Capt. Ed Rohrer in 1965.  He took delivery in Bristol, RI and sailed her to his home port of Gloucester, MA.  His first voyage was to Myrtle Beach, SC, to get married in the cabin by candle light; then he and his bride sailed to Florida.

He had the boat trucked back to Gloucester.  For the next 20 years, they cruised the coast from Buzzard’s Bay to away Down East.  4 owners later, I got her for the same price he paid in 1965. I will post pics of the cabin – a bit different than later models.

This was the first hull built with an inboard – a Graymarine SeaScout 25hp.  Runs like a dream, but it’s hell finding parts, and custom machining isn’t cheap.  But she sails so well, I hardly use the motor – twice all summer, in fact.

Owner Comments

October 3, 2018 – We were sailing into Bullock Cove Sunday afternoon, last sail of the season, nice broad reach but a very narrow channel with plenty of powerboat traffic, when the tiller failed. Attached are pictures of the failure point. Vise grips on the rudder head, and teamwork, got us back to the dock.  Here’s an image of the break:

August 3, 2011 – We went out last night, my son and I, and got caught in a squall off Black Point in the Sakonnet.  Roller furling is great, but the sail shape when partly furled is terrible, as you know.  Still did five knots, with one reef and just a bit of jib showing.  We had a second reef point sewn into the main two years ago; only used it once so far.  Over the years, someone took a lot of hardware off the boom, so I’m having to re-rig the outhaul gear.

Also did a bottom job this year, right down to bare gelcoat; 4 barrier coats and a lot of pinholes filled.  She really needs topside and deck jobs, but my pockets only support one thing at a time!

  1. Hi My name is Paul Silvia, I was the 3rd owner. I reserched and found Ed ( the original owner ). I hope you will keep the connection going and keep up on her history. I have pictures of Tora being built if you are interested as well as some early pics. I now have a Bristol 22 that I sail in Mt hope bay. Where is Jura now?? I got stuck in a real blow with my son and Tora got us home and w even kinda enjoyed it!

    • If you head South through the Tiverton basin, head toward the two water tanks on the Portsmouth side. JURA is moored about a half-mile North of McCorrie Point, right across from the Channel 6 tower in Tiverton. We sail through Mt Hope Bay every Spring and Fall, on our way to her winter home in Bullock Cove.

      • Clay, So glad to hear the boat is now in good hands. The guys I sold it to kinda let her degrade a bit. I would see her sitting filthy at the mooring and shake my head.
        Just for your info if you have the box of documents that have followed the boat, there is a place in NJ that has parts for the gray marine.Paperwork form my purchases should be in there. Hopefully you have the extra carb I purchased for a spare. The alternator, generator is from a fire engine and was adapted to fit. It really cranks out the juice. I also put rings in it about 6 years ago just before I sold it. Very easy engine to work on. Two guys pulled it out in our arms. I also installed new tiller seals. If you notice the boat has a slight tilt to it when sitting. Ed pulled out some of the ballast so he could add more weight to it for a long sea voyage and never replaced it.
        I removed the head and installed the porta potty. I still have it if you would like it.

        • Thanks, but I don’t need a marine head! Glad to be rid of it. The carb and fuel pump came in mighty handy though. I bought a new coupling for the alternator, and had to have a new shaft custom-made (ouch!) but engine runs like a dream now.

          I’ll watch out for you, and monitor 16!

  6. Upgrades for 2012: cleaned toe rail, 4 coats of teak oil. Installed cheek blocks and strap eyes for furling gear on boom. Replaced companion ladder with built-in steps.

    Splashed May 13, a month earlier than usual!
